Who's behind Drax?

What did you want to do when you were 3?

Richard struggled to understand some of the pantomime humour but being only three this wasn't really surprising. More surprising was the fact that he spent half his time sat backwards looking at the lights. He always faced forward to see the lighting effect when the magic mirror spoke and by the end was able to point out which light came on to make it happen. Unfortunately these new experiences proved too tiring so he slept through most of act 2.

Richards first school had two floodlights on stands, not exciting but still remembered and even his Lego modelling contained lights. The middle school lights controlled via early dimmers just had to be played with. He became the first pupil to touch the stage lighting and would light all the shows in the school, even using colour filters! By the time he made it to upper school, he was also acquainted with amateur theatre. There, a combination of amateur and professional technicians and directors introduced the concepts of dramatic effect and psychological influence on the audience. Suddenly lighting seemed all powerful with the ability to make the audience feel happy or sad and control how they perceived the scenes in front of them. He even learned how to make the audience ignore one thing on stage and make them look at something else. With all these possibilities there really was no time for anything else. The buzz from seeing the influence of the lighting on the audience and being able to see the appreciation on a directors face was addictive. Richard soon learnt that lighting could add a new dimension to many other events as well as theatre. It became hard to put on a local event without Richard popping up to try out some lighting on it. No-one escaped; classical and rock concerts, speeches, displays, parties and even peoples gardens. But then came the need to earn a living. There was only one thing for it; Richard had to earn a living doing lighting and in 1989 Drax Lighting was born.

Since then, the Drax team has worked in venues ranging from local pubs and theatres to the London Palladium and Wembley Stadium and as far afield as Las Vegas, Amsterdam and Rottenburg. An infectious enthusiasm for the combination of art and technology has attracted like minded people and now, everyone who works with Drax (including our most recent recruit, Andrew) has worked on school, amateur and professional productions. They're all earning a living doing it but they're all there for that same buzz. We just can't help helping people with their shows!
